Contractors to break ground on Lubbock’s Overton Hotel and Conference Center

LUBBOCK, TX — The City of Lubbock, Texas, will soon see activity at the corner of Mac Davis Lane and Avenue X in Overton Park as contractors break ground on Lubbock’s new Overton Hotel and Conference Center. An official ceremony will be held Wednesday, September 26th from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Corner of Avenue X and 6th Street in Overton Park.  Plains Capital Bank, the construction lender, will be providing lunch after the groundbreaking ceremony from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

The hotel and conference center is a public/private partnership with the City of Lubbock being developed by Garfield Traub Development, LLC and to be operated by 1859 Historic Hotels, Ltd.  “These world-class facilities will contribute greatly to Lubbock’s ability to attract state and regional meetings and conferences and are planned to maximize economic impact,” said Steve Moffett, President of Garfield Traub’s Hospitality Division.

Since first announcing plans for the complex, Garfield Traub and 1859 Historic Hotels say the project has grown considerably. The hotel will be 15 stories with 304 rooms, and the conference center nearly doubled to 47,600 square feet. The long- sought development of the truly first class, full-service hotel and conference center in the high-plains region of Texas is scheduled for completion by spring of 2009.

“From the number of floors and rooms to the conference center footprint and layout, it has all evolved to better fit the market profile and the needs of the City. This is now a $66 million development that the entire project team is excited to lead from groundbreaking to completion.  We look forward to the grand opening of this incredible facility,” said Ray Garfield, Principal of Garfield Traub.

Guests will be greeted by a stunning lobby with 22-foot-high ceilings in the upscale, full-service hotel. Amenities will include a business center, fitness center, white tablecloth restaurant, bar and outdoor pool. An exquisite 11,400 square foot ballroom will be connected to the hotel and located along Avenue X to allow for ground-level courtyard access. The second level meeting rooms and executive board rooms will be accessed by a grand staircase connecting them to the ballroom level and hotel.

Garfield Traub, DLR Group and Turner Construction Company also worked together to complete the Overland Park Convention Center and Sheraton Hotel in Overland Park, Kansas.  That hotel, which received the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) 2003 National Award, was delivered ahead of schedule and substantially under budget in 2002.
